This is arguably Vall Llach's "Grand Cru." In other words, the top Spanish red wine of one of Priorat's top wineries. It is made exclusively from grapes coming from a single vineyard, called Mas de la Rosa, located on the outskirts of Porrera.
South-oriented, the vineyard is located at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. It is planted with centenary vineyards, firmly rooted in extremely steep, almost unworkable slopes composed of the famed, black slate llicorella soil of Priorat.
The 2017 vintage of Vall Llach Mas de la Rosa is a varietal Carignan. Selected and destemmed, the grapes were cold-macerated for 3 days and then fermented in 225 and 500-litre oak barrels and in little stainless steel tanks, with daily punch-downs and mild pump-overs.
After that, this Priorat red wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months.
It is crucial to decant Vall Llach Mas de la Rosa 2017 for a substantial period of time.
Only 1,500 bottles produced.
This wine bears the "Vi de Finca Qualificada” label, Catalonia's highest legal recognition concerning wine quality.
The red wine Vall Llach Mas de la Rosa has a bright, intense, dark cherry colour with a garnet rim.
Immensely deep, this old-vines Carignan has an unending aromatic richness. The purity of aromas is truly remarkable, with some distilled, pristine notes of wild berries and a seemingly unending parade of nuances, from red and blue flowers and menthol, to spices, liquorice, petricor and a metallic tip. Dim notes of spices and, again, a marvelously intoxicating mineral finish make this a quintessential Priorat red wine.
This wine of Vall Llach makes one's heart beat faster. Sturdy, wonderfully textured, concentrated and super intense. Palate is phenomenal, though still a bit compressed, and acidity is crisp and laser-like. Minerality is so present that sometimes the wine feels almost like drinking liquid stone. Tannins are ripe, nutritious, and the ending is matched by very few wines. An the wine is only in its beginnings! Exhilarating.
