Before Pingus and L'Emita, there was only one Spanish red wine which could be properly called "legendary". Its name is Vega Sicilia Único.
Made basically from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), nuanced by a droplet of Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes were sorted from 40 of the 210 hectares of vineyards owned by Bodegas Vega Sicilia. Located along the banks of the Duero river, their soils are composed mainly of limestone, sand and alluvial material.
Selected both on site and on arriving at the cellar, the grapes were first refrigerated for 24 hours and then macerated for 3 to 4 days. After that, this Gran Reserva red wine from Ribera del Duero was meticulously vinified.
After completing malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, Vega Sicilia Único 2011 was aged for 7 years in big oak vats and in new and used French and American oak barrels. Bottled in June 2017, it was aged for 3 more years in the bottle before hitting the market.
It is essential to decant Único from Ribera del Duero at least 2 hours before drinking. Needless to say, the wine has a remarkable aging potential.

Appearance | The red wine Vega Sicilia Único is medium ruby with a garnet rim. |

Nose | The nose of the VS Único red wines is the stuff of legend, and this blend of Tinto Fino and Cabernet Sauvignon proves why. Remarkably delicate aromas of underbrush, flowers, bitter cocoa and withered leaves, with hints of blackcurrants, a remarkably original meaty note, and subtle remembrances of cardamom, clove and cinnamon. |
Palate | The combination of a world-class terroir with the remarkable craftmanship of the team of Bodegas Vega Sicilia has resulted in a virtually flawless wine. Round, deep and superbly elegant, with sculpted tannins, layers upon layers of flavours, a great acidity and a very long, delicately spicy and earthy finish. |
Our personal opinion | The incomparable Vega Sicília Único 2011 is an age-worthy, world-class red wine. |
