Bodega Tobía

Bodega Tobía

Oscar Tobía transformed two family wineries in the Rioja into one modern and original winery where today, he crafts sincere and expressive Rioja wines.

In 1994, in Rioja Alta, Spain, Oscar Tobía and Ana Castelló came together to transform their family wineries, which were crafting “cosechero” wines (a pre-Bordaux process sometimes referred to as harvest wine, and very hard to preserve) into this modern winery, Bodegas Tobía. There was the construction of a new facility with an integrated vinification process and the potential to continue to re-invest revenue into the winery as it grew. This winery re-invested and soon transformed into one of the most original wineries in the world. The facilities of this winery were moved in 2010 to Cuzurrita on the Río Tirón river, which is also inside of the Rioja Alta.

Bodegas Tobía has “pago” rated vineyards (the higest quality rating of Spain) in 15 different plots throughout the DOC Rioja, spanning 150 Hectares. Each of these individual plots has unique and diverse micro-climates and soils which allows the Bodegas Tobía to craft wines that represent the complexity and essence of the Rioja terroir. Each wine by Bodegas Tobía is unique and they are well representative of the nuanced differences in grapes from within the Rioja.

The techniques of the Tobía winery´s vinification processes utilize the simplest methods possible in order to present the maximum expression of the Rioja grapes in their wines, along with pure expressions of the oak woods used to age them.

The red and white wines from the Bodega Tobía winery are crafted from the single varietal or blends of Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo, Graciano (Morrastel), Viura, and Malvasía grapes. These grapes are all very well representative of their individual terroirs with their unique flavors and aromatics. When these grapes are crafted into wine and aged in oak they represent a perfect harmony between fruit and wood. There young red wines from Tempranillo, Grenache, and Viura with Malvasía are pure fruit explosions in a glass.

In 1996 the curiosity and innovation of the enologists at the Oscar Tobía winery, lead to the release of the first ever barrel fermented rosé wine of Spain, Alma de Tobía.
