The Fermí Bohigas family winery was founded in 1933 and today they are crating wines with unique characters in a fully artesian manner from a combination of tradition and innovation.
The Cavas Bohigas winery currently has nearly 100 hectares of recovered grapevines at their Mas Macià and Can Batlle Vell vineyards surrounding their winery´s new facilities. At the Mas Macià winery there are over 35 hectares of grapevines along the banks of the Anoia River where this family has physical evidence of ancestors in this region dating back the twelfth century. In 1933, Joan Vives Gibert founded these vineyards and started the production of sparkling wine in the Cava D.O. of Spain
The first bottles of cava were sold for Christmas 1936 and since this day this family has continued to craft innovative and high quality wines. The vineyards at Mas Macià produce very high quality grapes for the wine bases necessary to produce the cava at the Bodega Bohigas winery. This vineyard cultivated the native grape varietals: Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada, along with the foreign grape varietals: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The grapevines at the finca Can Batlle Vell vineyards are planted in calcareous soils in a micro-climate that is very influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. This vineyard cultivated the native grape varietals—Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada—from 50 year old grapevines. This vineyard has also incorporated Grenach Blanc, Muscat, and the French grape varitetal, Chennin Blanc. Furthermore, with their Cabernet Sauvignon and Sirah grapes this winery crafts very relaxed wines that have an incredibly pleasant palate.
All of the wide range of cavas by the Fermí Bohigas winery are crafted from a traditional coupage with the exception of the Grand Reserve cava that incorporates Chardonnay and their rosé cava with is crafted form Trepat and Pinot Noir grapes.
The Fermí Bohigas winery, with a selection of the best grapevines and with years of experience in vinification, is currently crafting very high quality wines and cavas such as the white wines Udina, Fermí, and Noa; their red wine from Syrah, and their cava from Xarel-lo and Pinot Noir. These are all very fresh, powerful, and seductive wines.
