Details

Finca Morenillo 2011 is one of the most interesting wines produced by the Celler Piñol winery, based in the southern Catalan region of Terra Alta.

This red wine is a single varietal Morenillo, an indigenous variety that was on the verge of extinction not many years ago and that is now being recovered by some conspicuous wineries.

The Morenillo vines  are over 100 years old. Located at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, they are planted on clay-limestone soils with very low levels of organic matter.

The grapes were harvested in late October. Meticulously selected in the cellar, they were fermented in stainless steel tanks and subsequently transferred into new French oak barrels.

There, this wine from Terra Alta completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for a period of 15 months in French oak barrels.

Finca Morenillo 2011 is a limited-edition wine. Production of only 3,000 numbered bottles.

Additional Information

Appearance

Very bright, clean, intense medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.

Nose

Clean, expressive aromas of ripe blackberries, wild strawberries and blueberries, along with rosy pepper, liquorice, cinnamon and some floral and herbaceous overtones. On the background, notes of coffee, cocoa and mineral.

Palate

Fresh and highly characteristic. Medium-bodied, velvety and displaying an excellent acidity and bold, crunchy tannins. Distinctive notes of flowers and red berries over a mineral background. Long finish with remembrances of ripe black fruit, spices and balsam.

Our personal opinion

Finca Morenillo 2011 opens new vistas in the fascinating world of indigenous Spanish grape varieties.
