Belonging to the DO Penedès, the Garraf Massif is a region with a distinctive character. It is an area of marine origin whose soils have an abundance of lime nodules and marine fossils. When absorbed by the plants, those elements lend the wines a nicely mineral (for lack of a better word) character.
As for this Xarel.lo Finca Viladellops it is a blend of the high-acidic, well-structured Xarel.lo (70%) and a coloured, scarcely planted mutation of the first grape called Xarel.lo Vermell (30%). The organically grown grapes come from three plots which house the oldest vines of the winery.
Harvested by hand and separately vinified, the grapes of this organic white wine (also known as Finca Viladellops Xarel·lo XXX) were cooled to a temperature of 3 to 5ºC and cold-macerated. Fermentation took place in French oak barrels, after which the wine was aged on its lees for a minimum of 12 months with periodic stirrings. Made from the best samples, this white wine from Penedès wine was kept on its lees until it was gently clarified prior to its bottling.
The age-worthy Finca Viladellops Xarel·lo 2016 has a production of only 5,000 bottles.
Decant this white wine from Finca Viladellops 1 hour before drinking.
The white wine Finca Viladellops Xarel·lo has a pale yellow colour with steely tinges and a golden hue at the rim.
Complex and highly characteristic, this Crianza white wine begins suggesting notes of pastry and white flowers intertwined with some mineral and undergrowth remembrances. As this wine from Finca Viladellops opens, it becomes ever more expressive, evoking dry fruit, marzipan, Mediterranean garrigue, white fruit and touches of anise and fennel.
Wow! First sensation is like breathing the marine breeze, with salty and iodized notes along with hints of flowers, pastry and white fruit. Smooth and extremely delicate, this blend of Xarel·lo and Red Xarel·lo from Penedès has an exceptional acidity and a long, saline, flowery finish. Complex stuff.
|Our personal opinion||
A white wine out of the ordinary, Finca Viladellops Xarel·lo 2016 combines the elegance of a great northern white wine with the enlivening salty light of the Mediterranean.

This is very good. Dry and focused, with a limestone minerality and a nice texture. It will grow in the bottle.
