In the former domains of the Scala Dei Carthusian monks, who began to grow grapes in Priorat back in the XIIth century, the Domini de La Cartoixa winery produces Formiga de Vellut.
This organic Spanish red wine is a blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. This combination of two indigenous grapes and an international one has proven highly successful in Priorat, as it produces terroir-driven and age-worthy wines that delight the many admirers of the region.
Grapes were harvested by hand and separately vinified. Fermented and subsequently macerated with the skins, this red wine from Priorat was then blended and aged for 9 months in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels.
Prior to its bottling, Formiga de Vellut 2016 was gently clarified. 40,000 bottles produced.
Incidentally, the 2014 vintage of this wine was served at the Nobel Banquet 2017.
The red wine Formiga de Vellut has an attractive, bright, high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.
Quite intense and suprisingly complex, this organic red wine by Domini de la Cartoixa shows some pure aromas of red berries, notes of balsam and lively hints of black pepper and strawberry candies over a dim mineral background.
A good balance between youth and power. This red wine from Priorat has some yummy tannins and a smooth body that weighs surprisingly little on the palate, making one think of an Atlantic wine. Playful notes of ripe red fruit, an elegant layer of spices and a fresh, light, smooth finish.
