Some years ago, the highly respected Gramona winery started to reconsider its whole approach to winemaking. As a result of that, the company decided to radically redefine its oenological practices, implementing environmentally friendly policies, embracing organic and biodynamic farming and producing uncompromisingly terroir-oriented wines.
One of the products crafted according to the new standards, Gramona Ovum Xarel.lo 2014 is a varietal, certified organic white wine made from Xarel·lo, Catalonia's most important white variety. The grapes used to produce this wine come from Font Jui, a 4-hectare estate located at the heart of the Penedés DO.
Grown on clay-limestone soils, the grapes were carefully selected, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Delicately pressed, the wine was produced only from the "free-run" juice.
After being fermented, Gramona Ovum Xarel.lo 2014 was aged on its lees in egg-shaped vats and clay amphorae in order to bring roundness and creaminess to the wine.
Clean, bright, straw yellow colour with some grey and greenish tinges.
Intense, pure aromas of white and yellow fruit, along with some notes of aromatic herbs and dry fruit.
Gramona Ovum Xarel·lo 2014 shows a wonderful purity on the palate that benefits from the absence of oak. Notes of lemon, pomelo, almonds and pistachio go hand in hand with some bitter, vermouth-like hints and herbal remembrances. Extremely fresh and quite linear, the wine shows the wonderfully discreet personality of the xarel.lo grape. Long finish with some remembrances of aromatic herbs and dry earth.
