Shortly after he began producing wines, Carlos Esteva, owner of the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery, had the intuition that some foreign varieties could adapt successfully to the unique terroir of the Garraf Massif.
Following that path, he decided to craft a wine solely from Chenin, the light, high-acidic white variety native to the Loire Valley. The results proved that his hunch had been correct.
It is produced from a less than 1-hectare vineyard. Over 30 years of age, the plants grow in shallow, calcareous soils with an abundance of marine fossils. This fact gives the wine an exceptionally mineral character.
Carefully harvested, the grapes were cold-soaked and gently crushed. Then this white wine from Penedès was fermented and aged on its lees in French oak barrels for 4 months with periodic stirrings.
We recommend that you drink Gran Caus La Calma 2014 cool, not chilled.
Decant 30 minutes before drinking. Drink until 2024.
The white wine Gran Caus La Calma has a straw yellow colour with some golden tinges.
This single varietal Chenin from Penedès shows some evocative aromas of aniseed, honey, white hawthorne, camomile, white fruit and white flowers punctuatued by some deep, complex mineral notions.
An exceptionally seductive white wine from Penedès. Flowers, white fruit with some nuances of citrus, dim buttery remembrances, a hint of wax and honey and a distinctive calcareous minerality. The wine has a smooth body, real complexity, great balance a superb acidity. Long finish with some salty and mineral remembrances.

Truly a wine for connoisseurs, Gran Caus La Calma 2014 is something very special.

I could not have liked this wine more. It is not cheap, but it really worths it. On the same level with some great Loire whites.
Super cool Chenin from the Mediterranean. Despite the fact that it comes from a hot climate, the wine feels incredibly fresh and mineral. It has poise, texture and real depth. 5 stars!!
