The vineyards belonging to the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery are located in the Garraf Massif, a subzone of the Penedès DO with a very particular character, defined by its vicinity to the sea and its calcareous soils with an abundance of marine fossils.

The red wine Gran Caus Negre was crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from vines over 30 years of age.

Harvested by hand, the grapes of this Spanish red wine were traditionally vinified with indigenous yeasts. Then Gran Caus Negre 2011 underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, where it was aged for 12 months.

Amazingly, the wine was subsequently aged for a further 6 years in the cellar before its commercial release. Thus, the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery guarantees its customers that this reserve red wine is only released when it is ready for consumption. A most uncommon thing, considering the frantic pace of today's wine business.

Drink Gran Caus Negreover the next 6-8 years. Decant 2 hours before drinking.

Additional Information

This exceptional reserve from Penedès has an intense cherry colour with a brick red rim. This Gran Caus Negre is beautifully coloured.

Nice, extremely elegant aromatic complexity, typical of a blend of French grape varieties, slowly emerging from its seven year sleep and requiring plenty of aeration to unfurl completely. Red fruit, extremely pure, dim mineral notions, remembrances of Mediterranean underbrush and hints of Havanna cigars, moka, Jamaican pepper, balsam and cocoa.

Intense, round, with an understated elegance. This red wine by Can Ràfols dels Caus has a first-class acidity, exceptional balance and well-integrated tannins. Fruit, citrus, aromatic herbs, spices and a mineral and earthy background. Very articulate and detalied, this red wine from Penedès has a splendid texture and a long, mineral finish.

Our personal opinion

The Bordeaux blend Gran Caus Negre 2011 needs some time to deliver. When it does, though, the results are spectacular. Truly an age-worthy red wine.
