The Sumoll grape is a very interesting variety because of its high acidity, a key feature in Mediterranean wines.
Interestingly, it is often the case that, when people drink Sumoll for the first time, they find that this old native variety is similar to the famed Nebbiolo from Piedmont.
This Spanish red wine is produced from old, 40 to 70-year old Sumoll vines grown in the towns of La Bisbal del Penedès and Aiguamúrcia.
2013 was a tough vintage. Temperatures were higher than usual and the amount of rainfall was below average.
Vinification, fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks.
Then, Jané Ventura Sumoll 2016 was aged for 11 months in 2nd year French oak barrels in order to preserve its varietal character.
Drink until 2021.
Sumoll is a very reductive variety. We suggest that you decant the wine for a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.
Jané Ventura Sumoll has a very bright, clean, deep red-coloured, medium-low robe with some violet glints.
This varietal Sumoll from Penedès is delicate and floral, showing notes of fresh violets, lavender, red berries, nuances of orange and lemon rind, some herbal remembrances, aromas of undergrowth and some dim toasted and earthy remembrances.
A pleasant and utterly unconventional red wine by Jané Ventura. The overall profile of the wine constrasts starkly with the juicy, bold character of many Mediterranean wines. This wine is zippy and crisp, with a remarkable acidity, powerful tannins, notes of blood orange, aromatic herbs and balsam. More linear than wide, with a medium finish with some toasted and mineral remembrances.

Jané Ventura Sumoll 2016 is a wine that reveals some of the potential of an old Catalan indigenous variety. Great ageing potential.

I had read some excited comments about Sumoll so I decided to give this a try. It shows a completely different side of Catalan wines. You don't really know where to place it at first: Italy, France? Anyway, it is super crisp, high acidic, with lots of herbs and forest aromas. Just phenomenal.
