Made from old-vines Grenache (60%) and Carignan, aka Samsó (40%), L'Alleu Vinyes Velles is a Spanish red wine produced by the Vendrell-Rived winery in the wonderfully rugged, mountainous environment of the Montsant DO.
The organically farmed vines are planted on clayey-limestone and slate, llicorella soils which are highly characteristic of the region.
The grapes were separately vinified. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration lasted from 20 to 30 days, after which the wine was transferred into French oak barrels in order to complete malolactic fermentation.
Finally, L'Alleu Vinyes Velles 2016 was aged for 10 months in those same barrels prior to its bottling.
We suggest that you decant this organic red wine from Montsant 30 minutes before you drink it.

The wine L'Alleu Vinyes Velles has a medium-high, claret-coloured robe with purple tinges.
The nose of this blend of Grenache and Samsó (Carignan) from Montsant is clean and sharp, with clear notes of wild berries, underbush and balsam combined with notes of vanilla and spices. Noticeable mineral background.
This red wine from Montsant by Vendrell-Rived is quite intense on the palate, and it displays a surprising acidity and a remarkable tension. Flavours of jammy black fruit, spices and deep mineral notions. Long spicy finish.

Excellently priced, L'Alleu Vinyes Velles 2016 from Montsant is mineral, fresh and fruity. A good companion for game dishes, cured meats and Manchego cheese.

This is like a not-so-hearty Priorat. It costs less but it is very good.
