The prestigious Jorge Ordóñez founded Bodegas La Caña in 2003 with the aim of creating an Albariñowine of great quality. More than ten years later, and with the aid of New Zelander oenologist Natalie Christensen, he has undoubtedly fulfilled his goal.
A single varietal Albariño from Rías Baixas, La Caña is made from grapes coming from a selection of 12 of the 38 little plots planted before 1990 in the Salnés valley. The grapes come from low-yielding vines, an all of the vinification process is carried out following traditional techniques.
Manually harvested, 25% of the Albariño grapes were fermented in 500 and 600-litre French oak barrels, while the rest completed the process in stainless steel tanks.
Then this Spanish white wine was aged for 8 months on its lees. After that, it was blended and aged for a further months.
The Albariño La Caña 2016 will improve in the bottle for a minimum of 5 years.
This white wine from Galicia has consistently received accolades and high scores by some of the world's top wine critics.
The white wine La Caña has a bright, straw-yellow colour with golden tinges.
This Albariño aged in oak exhibits some elegant notes of white fruit and yellow fruit, along with white flowers, some remembrances of citrus rind and some overtones of herbs and wet earth.
Exquisitely crafted, this Spanish white wine from Rías Baixas has a substantial volume that fills the mouth, though at the same time it is light, fresh and dry. Flavours of citrus, balsam and aromatic herbs over a mineral background enlivened by a salty touch. Very good acidity and long, slightly bitter finish.
|Our personal opinion||
Once again, Jorge Ordóñez has hit the mark. La Caña 2016 is a substantial Albariño from Galicia that will very well with seafood and fish recipes.
