This wine is one of the absolute classics of modern Rioja.

It is produced by Bodega Contador, the personal project of Benjamín Romeo. Mr. Romeo, the former chief oenologist of Bodega Artadi, is one of the most prestigious winemakers currently operating in Rioja,

A single varietal Tempranillo, this age-worthy red is made from estate-owned vineyards farmed with the utmost respect for the environment and minimizing human intervention.

After a meticulous selection, the grapes were fermented in truncated cone-shaped vats. Each plot was separately fermented.

Then the wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Before its bottling, it was neither clarified nor filtered.

Thus, we suggest that you gently decant the wine to remove any potential sediment and let it breathe for a minimum of 1 hour.

Drink La Cueva del Contador 2014 until 2028+.

Additional Information

Clean, bright cherry colour with a purple rim.

Deep mineral and balsamic nuances, an enticing sense of land and terroir, refined notions of spices, cocoa, coffee and aromatic herbs, and extremely pure aromas of red and black fruit.

Smooth, bold and a little tight, with a remarkable room for growth. This is a mighty expression of the Tempranillo grape, which appears in its full splendour. Concurrently, the terroir notes are well-defined and characteristic. Excellent acidity, great freshness and a long finish with some mineral and spicy remembrances.

  1. Cueva review by An outstanding Rioja on 11/15/2017

Winemaking taken to its top level. The nose is pure and fresh, the oak does not mask the fruit, but works as an enhancer instead. Palate is nothing short of phenomenal. Almost cheap considering the quality and potential.
