This is the new vintage of La Florens, a confidential wine from Josep Grau Viticultor which enjoys a considerable reputation among those in the know.
The plants grow in clay-limestone soils, and are farmed following the guidelines of organic agriculture.
After a meticulous harvest, this Grenache from Montsant was fermented using only indigenous yeasts.
Interestingly, both the vinification and the ageing process -which lasted 14 months- took place in 2000-litre Stockinger wooden vats from Austria. That was done to preserve the exceptional quality of the fruit, and to enhance the expression of the soil by reducing the wood footprint.
Decant La Florens 2017 1 hour before drinking.
Production around 5,000 bottles.
The red wine La Florens has an intense cherry colour with some violet glints.
This enticing old-vines Grenache exhibits some remarkably pure aromas of black fruit, deep forest, Amarena cherries, aromatic herbs, balsam and flowers over a mineral background. This red wine from Montsant is definitely terroir-oriented.
Freshness, tension and acidity are the key words here. This red wine by Josep Grau Viticultor is refined and enticing, with pristine notes of wild berries, intense mineral undertones, remembrances of blue flowers and lavender and some balsamic notions. La Florens has a rock-solid structure with lively tannins and a long, complex finish.
|Our personal opinion||
Smooth, dreamy, suggestive, La Florens 2017 goes far beyond the cliché of what a Mediterranean wine is supposed to be.

Right now, I consider this wine to be on a par with some first-class Grenaches from Chateneuf du Pape. If Florens ages well, it will become a truly great wine.
As an old fan of Montsant reds, I think this is maybe the BEST wine to come out of the region since Espectacle. Mr. Josep Grau has something very nice here, and if he continues to refine his winemaking approach the result will be a killer wine.
Simply fantastic! Elegant and complex wine...
