Produced by the Roqueta family, Lafou de Batea is the flagship wine of the LaFou Celler winery. The production is very limited. Only 6,000 bottles.

This top-notch Spanish red wine is produced from over 100-year-old grapevines located in a estate called Mas Gabrielet, belonging to the southern Catalan DO of Terra Alta. The 2015 vintage is made from a blend in which Grenache takes the main part, complemented with some Samsó (aka Carignan).

Harvested by hand and selected on site and in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed, fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks. Then a portion of the wine was transferred into French (80%), American (10%) and Central European (10%) oak barrels, and the rest was transferred into egg-shaped concrete tanks. Both were aged for 12 months, after which this red wine from Terra Alta was blended and bottled with no fining or filtration. Finally, the wine was aged for a minimum of 12 months in the bottle before its release.

The red wine Lafou de Batea has a dark, cherry-coloured robe with some ruby tinges.


Intense, deep and terroir-oriented. Juicy, pristine red fruit, slowly evolving into blackberries and brambles, typical of a blend of Grenache and Carignan. Slowly but steadily, this crianza red wine sets off towards unknown territory, with some nuances of black olives, dried tomates, lavender, and Mediterranean garrigue. The ageing notes are subdued and remain on the background, in the form of subtle spicy and toasted hints.


Bold, substantial and commanding, with an initial warmth which soon fades away in a exultantly fresh passage. This wine by Lafou Celler has some super juicy fruit, all of the aromatic subtleties previously described and, finally, a resounding, wonderfully expressive and deep minerality. Acidity is first-class, taking on a slightly citrusy form, and tannins are ripe and yummy. Extremely long finish with some balsamic and mineral remembrances.

Our personal opinion

With wines like LaFou de Batea 2015, the Terra Alta DO proves that it is a region worthy of serious attention.
