When they first thought of producing this Cava, the aim of the Masia Can Mayol winery was to create a new, original, radical sparkling wine that bore very little resemblance with the rest of the products currently existing in the market.
Loxarel 109 Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2004 is a sparkling wine made from 90% Xarel·lo, a variety indigenous to Penedés that produces wines with an introverted, restrained profile, but also with a great ageing potential, plus a 10% of Chardonnay.
Precisely because this is still a little-known product, we think that our customers may be interested in knowing that this wine won two consecutive gold medals in the Decanter World Wine Awards in the years 2013 and 2014.
Made following the traditional champenoise method, the name of the wine comes from the fact that it was aged for 109 months prior to its commercial release. This Catalan sparkling wine is made in the new DO, Clàssic Penedès, which includes wineries that produce organic sparkling wines of high quality.
However, the most interesting feature of Loxarel Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2004 is that the wine is sold, so to speak, completely "raw".
First, the wine was not disgorged before its bottling, which means that all of its fermentation lees are still inside. Second, the cork and the metallic cap are also the same that were put in the bottle back in 2005.
Finally, and speaking of the bottle, it retains the patina accumulated for more than a decade, as the chief winemaker took the daring decision of selling the wine with the layer of dust that bears witness to the wine's long ageing process.
This is why, incidentally, the wine comes wrapped in opaque paper.
Only 1,000 bottles were bottled this Spanish sparkling wine, that will age beautifully for a minimum of 5-7 years.
Loxarel 109 Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2004 is slightly turbid, as it was not filtered before its bottling. Bright, pale golden colour with straw yellow tinges.
Enticing nose, displaying aromas of baked apples, dried apricots, sweet peaches, yeasts, butter, toasted bread and cocoa. After more than 109 months, the wine is so fresh it is hard to believe that, by now, it has been aged for more than a decade. Lemon rind, some salty touches, dry flowers, a mineral, chalky sensation and, finally, a remembrance of Havana cigars.
Harmonious and amazingly complex, showing flavours of english cream, ripe white fruit, vanilla, dry fruit, aniseed, fennel, aromatic herbs, orange rind, some touches of honey, notes of pastry and even mineral undertones. The body is irresistibly silky, acidity is monumental and bubbles are perfectly integrated, almost imperceptible. Very long, fruity finish.
