Malpaso 2015, by Bodegas Canopy, is a single varietal Syrah produced in Méntrida, an area belonging to the increasingly famous region of the Gredos Mountains.

This Spanish red wine was crafted from vines 15 to 20 years old grown in sandy soils at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level.

Harvested by hand and carefully selected, once in the cellar the grapes were cold-soaked prior to alcoholic fermentation.

Then the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks. After that, it was transferred into 50% new and 50% 2nd year 400 and 500-litre French oak barrels.

There, this varietal Syrah from Méntrida completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 8 months.

Malpaso 2016 was not filtered or clarified prior to its bottling.

Drink until 2021. Decant 30 minutes before drinking.

Additional Information

Malpaso has an intense, clean, bright cherry-coloured robe with a bluish rim.

This red wine from Méntrida shows plenty of varietal character. Black fruit, aromatic herbs, clove, pepper, a dash of chocolate, black olives, wet earth and some mineral remembrances.

Fresh, gentle and well-structured, this red wine made solely from Syrah by Bodegas Canopy has some ripe tannins and a good acidity. Ripe mulberries, laurel, some smokey nuances, black pepper and undergrowth. Long, delicately sweet finish.

Our personal opinion

Malpaso 2016 is a fresh, honest, utterly enjoyable Syrah from central Spain.

  1. great syrah review by Bolts on 2/7/2019

Cool climate Syrah. Delicious, and incredibly priced.

  2. Malpaso review by Good Step on 10/23/2017

Is this the best Syrah produced in Spain? I honestly think so, at least to my knowledge. The altitude gives the wine a supple character and a great freshness, and the varietal character is very present.
