Besides its legendary reds, La Rioja produces some exceptional Spanish white wines. The proof? Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía.
The grapes come from over 70-year-old vineyards located in the highest area of the Ygay estate, Pago Capellanía, located at an altitude of 485 metres above sea level.
Manually harvested, the grapes of this white wine from Rioja were gently crushed, after which the resulting wine must was drawn off.
Then this reserve white wine produced by Marqués de Murrieta was fermented in stainless steel tanks and subsequently aged in French oak barrels for 15 months. It was bottled in June 2018.

The wine Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía has an old-gold colour with some greyish glints.
Really complex, Capellanía by Marqués de Murrieta smells of raw almonds, liquor-infused white fruit, cumin, turmeric, citrus, withered leaves and damp earth. This white wine aged in oak also suggests some salty and mineral remembrances and hints of clove, menthol and toast.
A serious and bold single varietal old-vines Viura from La Rioja, with a first-class fruit and some lively wooden notions that need some time to fully integrate. Underbush, dry fruit, bone fruit, white flowers, aniseed, exotic spices and some mineral and vegetal nuances. Dry and creamy, with a tense acidity, great elegance and a long, unctuous, complex finish.

After drinking this, I'm definitely digging into the unknown world of Rioja whites...
This is up there with some really great French whites. It has everything: texture, class, terroir, complexity and freshness. Besides, my experience tells me that you can cellar Rioja whites for ages and you almost never encounter any problems of premox, a very serious problem of Burgundy whites.
