Matsu el Recio is an organic Spanish red wine made by the Matsu winery in the Toro DO. "Matsu", by the way, means "Waiting" in Japanese.

Made from 90 to 100-year-old Tinta de Toro vines (a mutation of Tempranillo with a higher tannin content), the grapes were harvested in their optimal ripening state, destemmed and put into 15,000 litre stainless steel tanks.

Fermented and macerated for 3 weeks at a low temperature, Matsu El Recio 2014 was then transferred into French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 14 months.

Gently clarified and filtered, this red wine from Toro was finally aged for a further 6 months in the bottle before its release onto the market.

Decant 1 hour before drinking. Drink until 2023.

Additional Information

Matsu El Recio has a high, dense garnet robe with mahogany tinges.

Intense aromas of cocoa, red berries, aromatic herbs and plums. This crianza red wine from Toro also suggests subtle hints of vanilla along with some mineral and earthy undertones.

This varietal Tinta de Toro by the Matsu winery is a smooth wine with a big structure and a silky texture. The palate displays wild berries, mineral notes, hints of cocoa, clove and vanilla and, above all, a mouthwatering, refreshing acidity. Long finish with remembrances of black and red fruit.

Our personal opinion

Matsu El Recio 2014 needs some time to show all its qualities. This is why we strongly suggest that you decant this gentle bull from Toro for at least 1 hour before you drink it.

Big Toro, but very fresh. Fruit is ripe and good. Nice price.
