This high-end Spanish red wine was produced by the Pago de los Capellanes winery, one of the most prestigious in Ribera del Duero.
Interestingly, Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal is produced from a 6-hectare vineyard planted with vines sorted from a massal selection of the best plants used to craft Finca El Picón, the winery's flagship wine.
The plot has a clay-limestone soil that brings a particular finesse and minerality to the wine. Moreover, yields are quite low.
This reserve red wine from Ribera del Duero is a single varietal Tinta Fina (Tempranillo). The grapes were harvested by hand, macerated for 7 days and then fermented in new French cone-shaped vats using indigenous yeasts.
After that, Pago de los Capellanes 2014 from Ribera del Duero completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels from different origins. During that period, the wine was racked four times.
It was not filtered, clarified or stabilized before its bottling.

The red wine Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Nogal has a clean, high, purple-coloured robe with a garnet rim.
This varietal Tinta Fina from Ribera del Duero shows complex notes of fresh fruit, wild berries, red and blue flowers and sweet spices, delicately nuanced by remembrances of vanille, cedar, cinnamon, Moroccan leather, toast and smoke. On the background, enticing mineral suggestions and hints of tobacco, liquorice and sandalwood.
Bold and sophisticated, but still tight, with plenty of room for growth, the reserve red wine Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal exhibits a judiciously bridled power, with velvety tannins and a crisp, solid acidity. Spices, menthol, wild berries, deep mineral notes, and intimations of underbush and flowers. Long finish with some toasted and smokey remembrances.

From the heart of Ribera del Duero, Pago de los Capellanes el Nogal 2014 is elegant, complex and age-worthy. Quite an experience.

An expensive wine indeed, but worth the buy. After a long aeration it began to unfurl, and it was amazing. The fruit, the depth, the impression of terroir. All in all, I think this wine should be aged for some years, because it is only beginning to fulfill its potential.
