Produced by the Perelada Group through its brand Finca La Melonera, Payoya Negra is mainly made from Syrah, and complemented with Grenache, Tintilla de Rota and the little-known Romé.

The main aim of the Finca La Melonera project, by the way, is to recover some long-forgotten native grapes from the southern Spanish DO of Sierras de Málaga.

The grapes were separately harvested in tiny, 7-kg. boxes. After that, they were macerated and fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Then this Spanish red wine was aged in big French oak vats from Allier for 12 months. Finally, it was aged for a further months in the cellar before its release.

Incidentally, Payoya is the name of an indigenous goat breed from the Ronda Mountains. That goat breed also gives its name to Payoyo, a superb cheese made from its milk.

Additional Information


The red wine Payoya Negra has an intense cherry colour with some purple tinges.


Rich aromas of toast and dry earth, underpinned by notes of juicy red and black fruit, sweet spices, balsam, flowers and an idiosyncratic note of wild underbrush -typical of the Romé grape- define this red wine from Málaga.


Meaty and palate-coating, this red wine from Finca La Melonera is also quite complex. Kirsch liquor, raspeberries, some lactic remembrances and some hints of aromatic herbs, blue flowers, vegetables and spices. Excellent acidity, ripe tannins and an overall fresh character. This blend with Tintilla de Rota has a long, fruity finish. 

Our personal opinion

From the largely unknown region of Sierras de Málaga, the well crafted and original Payoya Negra 2017 simply oozes personality.
