This is the new vintage of an exclusive Spanish red wine from L'Empordà produced by the Castillo de Perelada winery.
Belonging to the Ex Ex Collection (meaning Exceptional Experiences), the winery has taken a step further its aim of crafting unmasked, terroir-bound wines.
Thus, besides being produced following organic procedures, and using only wild yeasts, Perelada Ex Ex 12 is also a no added sulphites wine.
It is a blend of 7 varieties 31 Syrah, 22% Merlot, 17% Samsó, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Monastrell, 9% Cabernet Franc and 5% Grenache, coming from the following estates: Finca Espolla, Finca La Garriga, Finca Garbet and Finca Malaveïna.
Each variety was separately fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks. After that, the wines from each of the four estates were blended, transferred into oak barrels, and aged in the following manner. The wine from Finca Malaveïna was aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels, and the wines from Finca Espolla and Finca Garbet were aged, respectively, for 19 and 25 months in the same containers. As for the wine from Finca La Garriga, it was aged for 19 months in American oak barrels.
Bottled in November 2015, Perelada Ex Ex 2013 was aged for a further 42 months in the bottle before its release.
More than ever, it is critical to decant this red wine from L'Empordà, at the very least, 1 hour before drinking.
Production of 3,551 bottles.
Appearance | The red wine Perelada Ex Ex 12 has an intense, medium cherry-coloured robe with a garnet rim. |
---|---|
Nose | Impressively complex, as one might expect from a Crianza red wine made from seven grape varieties grown in different kinds of soils. Wild berries, some hints of flowers, lavender and aromatic herbs, combined with touches of dry earth, some mineral undertones, suggestions of citrus and dry fruit and aromas of Eastern spices. |
Palate | The palate of this wine from Perelada is even more interesting than the nose. Overall, the most striking aspect is the contrast between the polished texture typical of a high-end wine, with the sort of raw immediacy brought about by the fact that Ex Ex is a low sulphite, natural wine. Anyway, there is plenty to enjoy here. Flowers, spices, some remembrances of bitter chocolate, notes of black fruit, and a complex combinaton of some earthy and mineral notions. First-class acidity, yummy tannins, and very long finish with some toasted and fruity remembrances. |
Our personal opinion | Different, radical and exclusive, Perelada Ex Ex 12 2013 is a wine unlike any other. |
