Finca Garbet is a 12-hectare estate located on one of the spurs of Cap de Creus, the headland that constitutes Spain's easternmost point.
Owned by Castillo de Perelada, the vineyards are planted in terraces composed of slate soils, directly facing the Mediterranean Sea.
The place is constantly swept by a harsh, dry, unrelenting northern wind called Tramuntana, which is the most effective sanitizing agent that one can imagine. Besides that, it also operates as a natural temperature regulator.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks with two daily pump-overs. Fermentation was carried out using indigenous yeasts, and maceration lasted for 30 days.
After that, Perelada Finca Garbet 2009 was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (Tronçais).
Drink this high-end red wine from L'Empordà until 2025.
Decant no less than 2 hours before drinking.
Finca Garbet by Castillo Perelada has an abyssal cherry colour with a garnet rim.
An astonishing aromatic complexity in which the aromas of red and black fruit combine in the most seductive way with innumerable suggestions of aromatic herbs and Mediterranean garrigue. The notes of clove, cinnamon and exotic spices provide for a great counterpoint. Finally, at the bottom of this red wine from L'Empordà there is a deep, resounding minerality.
This Spanish red wine by Castillo de Perelada is bold, complex and voluminous. Somehow, the wines makes one think of the great Australian reds, though here there is a depth and a terroir-orientated side which is entirely original. The balance between fruit and wood is excellent, and the wine shows a phenomenal potential for improvement. Tannins are delicious and finish is spellbinding, with a mineral aftertaste that is like a wonderful picture of the rugged Empordà terroir.

On a par with some truly big names from Australia. It is not cheap, but if you like the style it is worth it.
I was in serious awe after finishing this wine. The big structure and volume are perfectly complemented with the mark of terroir. Plenty of local character, with an international flair.
