Details

The reputation of this Spanish red wine has not ceased to grow with each released vintage. In fact, Pétalos del Bierzo is one of the wines that put the indigenous red grape Mencía on the map, thanks to the work of Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios at the head of the Descendientes of J. Palacios winery.

The 2017 vintage, a very early one, is a blend of Mencía, coming from grapevines from 40 to 90 years old planted in steep slopes with slate soils, with a 10% combination of different white varieties (Palomino, Godello, etc.), a technique traditionally used in El Bierzo to bring acidity and fix the colour of red wines.

Carefully selected and destemmed, the grapes of this Mencía red wine were fermented and macerated in open wooden vats and stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation was completed in the same containers. After that, the wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels.

Finally, the wine Pétalos del Bierzo 2017 was clarified and gently filtered prior to its bottling.

Decant this red wine from El Bierzo 1 hour before drinking. Drink until 2025.

Additional Information

Appearance

The red wine Pétalos del Bierzo has a cherry coloured body with bright violet edges.

Nose

Delicate, highly suggestive floral character, carrying notes of violets and dry roses along with hints of black fruit, some touches of liquor, smoke and roasted coffee. This red wine from El Bierzo also insinuates some notes of wet undergrowth over a dim mineral background.

Palate

Again, this exciting Mencía shows that Pinot Noir-like quality that has seduced winelovers all over the world. Fresh and smooth, with a medium body and a velvety, lush texture. Notions of ripe black fruit, floral sensations, a distant note of game and venison and some fresh mineral undertones. Tannins are soft and well integrated. This wine by Descendientes de J. Palacios has a good acidity and a medium finish with some smoky, mineral remembrances.

Our personal opinion

Superbly crafted, gentle and nuanced, Pétalos del Bierzo 2017 encapsulates the very best qualities of El Bierzo. Speaking of which, there is no other wine region in Spain which has taken a more spectacular quality leap in recent years.

  1. Mencia!! review by Klaus Jones on 4/11/2018
    Value

One of my all-time favourite Spanish reds. I love Mencía!!

  2. Good mencia review by J. Plowright on 11/4/2017
    Value

If I'm correct, this was the wine that put Mencía on the wine radar. It has Burgundian style, though it is more earthy. Medium body, juicy, very fresh. Wonderful flavours and aromas. Unbeatable with meat dishes.
