Pezas da Portela is a magnificent expression of the Godello grape.
Interestingly, this recently recovered indigenous variety is considered by the distinguished wine critic Jancis Robinson as one of the very few Spanish white grapes capable of producing world-class white wines.
This Spanish white wine was produced by Bodega Valdesil in the Galician region of Valdeorras, Godello's homeland.
The grapes come from vines 50 to 70 years of age, planted with old clones and scattered over 11 little plots with different sun orientations and composed of slate soils.
Separately harvested and vinified according to its plot of origin, the grapes were destemmed and cold-soaked. Then they were gently crushed and fermented in French oak barrels of different capacities using wild yeasts.
After that, each of the wine musts was aged on its lees for 6 months with periodic stirrings.
Finally, the wine was blended and bottled. No filtration or stabilization were performed before bottling.
Before its market release, this white wine from Valdeorras by Bodega Valdesil was aged for a further 12 months in tanks.
Drink Pezas da Portela 2014 from now until 2024.
Decant a minimum of 30 minutes before drinking.
Pezas da Portela has a bright straw yellow colour with some golden tinges.
This varietal Godello from Valdeorras is complex and information-rich, displaying aromas of slate, black mineral, and wet earth, slowly evolving into white fruit, citrus, white flowers, camphor, aniseed, green apples, butter, spices and bread crust.
This white wine by Bodega Valdesil is bold and impressive, and with plenty of room for growth. White fruit, rose petals, cider, spices, citrus, balsam and a resounding minerality. Excellent acidity, great freshness and long finish. All in all, the wine is a bit tight, showing a remarkable ageing potential that will surely unloose its full potential.
