This is the new vintage of Planella, produced by the Joan d'Anguera winery.
Based in Montsant, several years ago the winery completely rethought its approach to winemaking. As a result, it was the first Montsant-based company to obtain a Demeter certification. According to that seal, all of the agricultural and winemaking procedures carried out by the winery follow strict biodynamic procedures.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were carefully selected and fermented in concrete tanks at a controlled temperature for about a month.
After that, this red wine from Montsant was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Decant or aerate Planella 2016 30 minutes before drinking. Drink until 2024.
14,000 bottles produced.
The wine Planella has a clean, bright ruby colour with a violet rim.
This biodynamic red wine from Montsant has something that we could only define as a sort of "inner force." The nose of this blend of Carignan and Syrah tremendously vivid, with remembrances of orange and lemon rind, red and blue flowers, aromatic herbs, wild berries, balsam, spices and cocoa.
This red wine by Joan d'Anguera is elegant, deep and bold, exhibiting a great purity and, again, a sort of inner impulse. This wine does not shout its virtues, but rather displays them in an understated way. It is very young, and has considerable room for growth. However, Planella from Montsant shows an excellent balance between fruit and oak ageing. Smooth tannins, very good acidity and long finish with remembrances of mineral and black fruit.

Crisp and deep, the Carignan provides the punch, and the Syrah mellows it just enough to avoid the wine being austere.
Honestly, I don't know how the winery is able to sell wines as good as theses at such a low price. This wine dances and sings in your palate without suffocating it. It is full of vitality, full-bodied and not even in its prime.
