Details

One of Ribera del Duero's all-time classics, Protos Gran Reserva is single varietal Tinta del País (Tempranillo) produced from low-yielding vines over 60 years of age.

This exquisite Spanish red wine was made from grapes which were harvested by hand at their optimal ripening point and meticulously selected, both on site and in the cellar.

First, this red wine from Ribera del Duero was fermented in stainless steel tanks. After that, Protos Gran Reserva was transferred into 80% French oak barrels and 20% American oak barrels, where it was aged for 24 months.

Finally, Protos Gran Reserva 2012 was aged for a further 36 months in the cellar prior to its commercial release onto the market.

Decant 1 hour before drinking.

Drink through 2030.

Additional Information

Appearance

The red wine Protos Gran Reserva has a clean, bright, intense claret colour with a brick red rim.

Nose

On the nose, this Gran Reserva crafted by Bodegas Protos is classy and wonderfully balanced. Delicate notes of cassis, blackberries and cranberries, with some flecks of toast, liquorice and cocoa over an earthy and mineral background.

Palate

Elegance, intensity and depth define this Tinta del País from Ribera del Duero. A note of menthol and pine needles nuances some lively flavours of black fruit and spices. The wine has a nicely textured and velvety body, with some ripe, suave tannins, and a well-balanced acidity. Long finish with remembrances of blackcurrants and cocoa.

Our personal opinion

The regal Protos Gran Reserva 2012 encapsulates Ribera del Duero's classicism. Pair it with substantial dishes and cured cheeses.
