This premium Spanish red wine is only produced in exceptional vintages. It is made from grapes coming from 18 little plots scattered over some of the best terroirs in the whole of Ribera del Duero. The vines are almost 80 years old, have extremely low yields and are located at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level.
The grapes of this wine from Ribera del Duero were manually harvested and selected twice, once in the vineyard and once in the cellar.
Alcoholic fermentation took place in large new French oak barrels, after the completion of which the wine was macerated for 4 weeks.
After that, Protos El Grajo Viejo 2015 was transferred into French oak barrels from different cooperages, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for over a period of 18 months.
Finally, after its bottling this old-vines Tempranillo was aged for a further 6 months before its commercial release.
This is a wine with a good ageing potential. Properly stored, it will improve in the bottle for about 6-8 years.
Decant this crianza red wine 1 hour before drinking.
9,327 bottles produced.
The red wine Protos El Grajo Viejo has an intense, medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.
Rather deep, this varietal Tinta del País has an explosive nose. Ever-evolving notes of black and red fruit, nicely intertwined with aromas of balsam, flowers and spices. This wine from Ribera del Duero suggests some deep mineral undertones, and some toasted notes and suggestions of truffles, charcoal and graphite.
Bold and impressive, this wine by Bodegas Protos has big bones and a massive structure. Velvety and kaleidoscopic, it has some room for growth, as fruit and oak ageing are slowly coming together. El Grajo has an extraordinary acidity, bold tannins and extremely long, complex finish.
