Driven by his desire to craft ever more terroir-oriented, site-specific Spanish red wines, Josep Grau Viticultor has produced two single varietal Grenache wines coming from the same plot and in exactly the same manner.
Made from vines located in the Serra d'Almos, south of DO Montsant, the only difference between the two wines is that Rogers is made from vineyards planted in slate soils, while its counterpart Maimó 2016 is made from vines planted in clayey and limestone soils.
Farmed following organic procedures and minimal intervention techniques, the grapes were harvested by hand, selected thrice and then fermented and macerated in a truncated cone-shaped vat. Afterwards, Rogers 2016 was aged in a 2,000-litre Austrian Stockinger oak vat for 14 months.
Not filtered or clarified before its bottling, this new red wine by Josep Grau produced in Montsant should be decanted 1 hour before drinking.
Drink over the next 6 years.
Very limited production. Only 1,775 bottles.
Appearance | The red wine Rogers has a bright ruby colour with a reddish rim. |

Nose | This Grenache from Montsant is fresh, pure and complex. Loads of wild berries, nuanced by some toasted and spicy notions, alongside a distinctive note of violets that enlivens a resounding, wonderful minerality combined with notes of wet earth and aromatic herbs. |
Palate | Intense and palate-coating, but in an extremely gentle and seductive way. This red wine from Montsant screams place and has plenty of structure to satisfy even the most demanding drinker. Smooth-textured and intrincate, with lively tannins and a superb acidity. Excitingly mineral, with liquorice, garrigue and flowers all over the palate. Very long finish. |
Our personal opinion | Complex, characterful, finely crafted. Rogers 2016 is a Grenache by Josep Grau that deserves a place in the sun. |
