It is made from vines planted in steep slate soils, and located at altitudes between 350 and 500 metres above sea level.
The 2016 vintage was defined by the high summer temperatures. Some abundant rainfalls in September, though, came just in time to revitalize the vines, allowing them grapes to achieve optimal maturity.
Each plot was separately harvested and vinified. Alcoholic fermentation was carried out with periodic punch-downs of the solid skin cap.
Then Salanques 2016 underwent malolactic fermentation in new and 2nd year French oak barrels, after which the wine was aged for 14 months.
Finally, this red wine from Priorat was aged for 12 months in the bottle before its release. It was neither filtered nor clarified before its bottling.
Decant a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.
This wine won the Vinari de Plata 2019 award in the age-worthy red wine category.
The red wine Salanques has an intense, medium-high, bright garnet-coloured robe with a ruby rim.
Truly a first-class Priorat red wine, the nose has all the mineral character of the region, but also an amazingly refined side much of its own. The fruit combines seamlessly with exquisite remembrances of flowers, and both notes are enhanced by subtle spicy remembrances, notes of cocoa and coffee, and of course an immensely enjoyable, mysterious mineral background.
This red wine by Mas Doix is bold, complex and precise, but neither cerebral nor overblown. Intrincate and multilayered, it combines drinking pleasure and intellectual safisfaction in a sort of ideal way. Smooth texture, exceptional balance between fruit and oak ageing, taut acidity and a very long, ever-evolving finish.
|Our personal opinion||
We definitely have a soft spot for this wine. Salanques 2016 is one of Priorat's most well-rounded wines, and a modern classic in the best sense of the word.
