In his aim to express the different sides of the mighty, multifaceted Monastrell, the great red variety indigenous to southeastern Spain, Jorge Ordóñez produces several varietal wines from that grape.

In this case, Tarima Monastrell, crafted by Bodegas Volver, is a Spanish red wine made from grapes coming from vines located at an altitude of 650 to 750 metres, right in the heart of the  Alicante DO. The ungrafted vines grow in rocky soils with very low levels of organic matter. They were planted between 1972 and 1979.

After a late harvest, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks. After that, Tarima Monastrell 2018 was gently aged for 6 months in the French oak barrels previously used to age Tarima Hill, another red wine from Alicante of the same winery.

Additional Information

The red wine Tarima Monastrell has a bright, high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.

Some intense notes of cranberries and blackberries, along with notes of sweet spices, fresh liquorice and some overtones of freshly-cut grass and aromatic herbs, typical of a Monastrell from Alicante.

The freshness of the fruit with the sweet notes coming from the oak ageing are nicely combined in this wine by Bodegas Volver. Nice touches of coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Good acidity and savoury tannins. Gentle, fruity finish.

Our personal opinion

Pleasant and well-rounded, Tarima Monastrell 2018 is quite an unbeatable value.
