Made from over 85-year-old grapevines planted in five plots, Triga is an exceptional Spanish red wine produced by Bodegas Volver.
Four of those plots are planted with Monastrell vines, while the fifth is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. Some of the vines, which are located at an average altitude of 750 metres above sea level, are ungrafted. As for the soils, they are filled with fossils and covered by a thick layer of limestone.
Produced by Rafael Cañizares & Jorge Ordóñez, with the aid of Aussie oenologist Chris Ringland, Triga 2016 was carefully harvested and meticulously crafted. Each plot was separately vinified. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, where this wine from DO Alicante was also aged for 20 months.
Once the ageing process was completed, this Spanish red wine was blended, resulting in a proportion of 85% Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
After its bottling, and prior to its commercial release onto the market, this red wine from Alicante was aged for a further months in the cellar in order to fully round it.
If you want to appreciate its great richness and complexity, we strongly suggest that you decant this reserve red wine for at least 1 hour before you drink.
The red wine Triga has a clean, bright, medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.
The aromatic complexity of this blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon, though it still needs some years to unfurl, is already astounding. Pristine fruit, red and black fruit in all their glory, along with some spicy touches some nuances of flowers and balsam. The background insinuates some notes of toast, tobacco and liquorice. There are also some hints of aromatic herbs and vegetables.
Elegant, intense and age-worthy, this red wine from Alicante has a bold entrance that fills the mouth with notes of jammy fruit, with delicate strokes of pepper and spices which evolve into hints of smoke, liquorice, cocoa, clove and balsam, all of which make for a quite impressive parade. Yummy tannins and great acidity. This wine by Jorge Ordóñez has a long, fruity finish with a deep mineral core.
|Our personal opinion||
A great Mediterranean red, Triga 2016 is as bold as it is deep. Needless to say, this wine by Bodegas Volver needs some time to settle down and fulfill its tremendous potential.

Superb wine. Immensely powerful and deep. The real thing.
Wow and Woooow!! Apparently massive, almost black-coloured and quite imposing. The nose is incredibly rich and the palate is... much elegant and nuanced than you would expect. Enormous structure, great precision, immense room for improvement. Exceptional!!
