This wine is produced from a selection of the best grapes coming from over 70-year-old vines planted at an altitude around 900 metres above sea level in Ribera del Duero.
The vineyards grow in a poor, demanding terroir composed of sandy-limestones soils and with very low levels of organic matter.
Climate there is extremly harsh. Summers are sizzling and very dry (with temperatures reaching 40ºC), while winters are extremely cold, with frequent freezes and temperatures down to-15ºC.
The harvest of Valduero Gran Reserva 2005 was carried out manually in late September.
Traditionally vinified, the wine was subsequently aged for 48 months in oak barrels from 6 different origins. After that, the wine was aged for a further 40 months in the bottle prior to its release.
Production of 10,000 bottles.
Decant a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.
Drink until 2026.
Medium-low, ruby-coloured robe with a brick red rim.
Notes of burnt sugar, cocoa, toast and coffee, alongside aromas of leather, liquorice, aromatic herbs, black fruit and liquor-infused fruit.
Extremely gentle and suave, showing a weightless volume, a deep sense of terroir and a vibrant character. Due to the long ageing period, the wine now shows an unimpeachable balance. Remembrances of Havanna cigars, cedar, clove, Moroccan leather and laurel, combined with notes of mulberries, blackcurrants, lavender and violets. Great acidity, bold tannins and very long, complex finish.
|Our personal opinion||
Valduero Gran Reserva 2005 is defined by one word: elegance. A wold-class red.
