This unconventional Spanish red wine is crafted exclusively from Syrah vineyards located in the Toledo mountains.
The 20-year-old grapevines are south-oriented at an altitude 850 meters above sea level. The soils are poor and full of stones, with a silica surface. The region has a continental climate, with hot and dry summers and cold and humid winters.
Produced by Pago de Vallegarcía, Vallegarcia Syrah was crafted with the utmost care. First the grapes were harvested by hand and macerated for 72 hours in stainless steel tanks. After that, the grapes were fermented for 21 days at a low temperature.
Then Vallegarcía Syrah 2016 was transferred into French oak barrels, where it was aged 12 months. Finally, it was further aged for a minimum of 12 months in the bottle.
Drink until 2023.
The wine Vallegarcía Syrah has a deep purple color with some ruby edges.
This single varietal Syrah from Pago Vallegarcía has a fruit-forward nose, nuanced by some balsamic notes, a touch of chocolate, vanilla and liquorice, and some slightly bitter and mineral remembrances. The nose evolves as the wine opens to the air, seguing into hazelnuts and almonds, enlivened with a note of raspberry jam and blue flowers.
Powerful and meaty, this crianza red wine is nevertheless fat-free and crisp, with solid tannins and a superb acidity. Everything is well balanced, with a great integration of wood, fruit and tannins. The aftertaste is reminiscent of candied plums, underbrush, spices and flowers.

One of the best Syrahs I've encountered in Spain, a country where that wondeful grape becomes an underachiever. This Vallegarcia, on the contrary, has a very nice bouquet of flowers, earth, forest floor and balsam. The palate has focus and a tart. Excellent.
