This remarkable Spanish red wine is made from the oldest, best Mencía vines selected among the 60 hectares of vineyards owned by the winery.
The vines grow in sandy-limestone soils, and 80% of them are over 50 years old.
Harvested by hand and traditionally vinified, this wine crafted by the great Raúl Pérez - chosen "Best Winemaker in the World" in 2015, incidentally, by the prestigious French guide Bettane + Desseauve - was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Bottled unfiltered, it was aged for a further months in the cellar prior to its commercial release.
Production of this red wine from El Bierzo is extremely low. Less than 5,000 bottles.

The red wine Valtuille Cepas Centenarias has an intense, bright, high cherry-coloured robe with a crimson rim.
Strikingly pure and very seductive, this red wine by Castro Ventosa begins suggesting some mineral notions, alongside aromas of red and black fruit, suggestions of violets, liquorice, undergrowth and balsam. The plot thickens with some remembrances of blood orange, meat and something that we can only define as some metallic-ferrous nuances. This red wine from El Bierzo has an astoundingly original and rich nose.
Intense, and palate-coationg, this old-vines Mencía from El Bierzo is both wonderfully textured and easily drinkable. Loads of red berries, deep mineral undertones that convey a real sense of place, a panoply of aromatic herbs and balsamic notions and some flowery overtones. Bold tannins, superb acidity and extremely long, complex finish. Like a great Burgundy, but with an earthier twist.

Without a doubt, Valtuille Cepas Centenarias 2015 is one of the best Mencía wines produced in El Bierzo, unquestionably one of Spain's most interesting wine regions.
