Though it is not usually regarded as land of white wines, La Rioja keeps producing some truly outstanding Spanish white wines.
One name stands above the rest when we talk about great Rioja white wines, namely the R. López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia winery.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were destemmed and subsequently fermented and macerated in huge wooden vats.
After that, this reserve red wine from La Rioja was aged for 6 years, with 2 annual rackings, in used American oak barrels. Then the wine was clarified with egg whites and bottled unfiltered.
Finally, Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva was further aged for a long period of time in the cellar prior to its commercial release in March 2018.
Drink now until 2026+. Production of 35,000 bottles.
We suggest that you gently decant the wine 30 minutes before you drink it.
The white wine Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has an intense, bright golden colour with some amber tinges.
Elegant and suggestive, this blend of Viura and Malvasia from La Rioja suggests some subdued, delicate notes of ripe white fruit, alongside notions of vanilla, smoke, spices, aromatic herbs, green tea, dry fruit and flowers.
Bold and rich, this white wine by the López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia winery has real complexity and an exceptional balance. Texture is substantial but also nimble and the wine is information-rich. Toast, spices, citrus, bitter herbs, mineral, honey, ginger, and some mineral remembrances. Round and gentle, with an exceptional acidity and a long, rich finish.
