Dominio de Atauta

Dominio de Atauta

The Dominio de Atuata winery is located in a privileged terroir that is situated at a high altitude where very old grapevines are planted in sandy parcels which are filled with natural vegetation. The wines crafted from this winery are very elegant expressions of these soils.

The Dominio de Atauta winery was founded in 1999 in the Valley of Atauta with four different altitudes of vineyards that are completely separated by the hillsides of the valley. These vineyards are located 4.3 miles (7 Km) outside of San Esteban de Gormaz, where the Spanish Duero was founded.

With a view of Somosierra, Mount Urbión, and the Moncayo, these vineyards are situated in what used to be the Golbán River. This area is alive with vegetation and trees, with the presence of herbs such as thyme and rosemary, mushrooms, and there is also abundant animal life in this region (hares, partridges, deer, and wild boar).

Despite the fact that this area is impacted by some neglect from the past, this region has a rich history for winemaking that allows the Dominio de Atauta to craft distinguished wines. In this ancient neighborhood with limestone cellars dug in sand, on gentle sloping valley hillsides, the winemaking tradition dates back five centuries.

One reason that the Dominio de Atauta winery is unique is the altitudes at which they cultivate their grapes. This winery´s vineyards are situated between 3,115 and 3,280 feet (950 and 1000 Meters) above sea level, which provides for slower ripening periods for their grapes. This winery mostly cultivated Tempranillo grapes (also referred to as Tinto Fino) with over 600 different parcels of grapevines. All of these parcels share similar soils that are full of sand and rocks with agglomerated limestone. This soil composition helped the region to fight the phylloxera epidemic in the past as these grapevines have very deep and strong roots. Currently, 80% of these grapevines are pre-phylloxera and they are planted in a Gobelet system. This helps to retain water and these grapevines are fertilized by all natural sheep’s manure and no chemicals additives of any kind are used at these vineyards.

All of the wines by the Dominio de Atauta winery are harvested by hand, and their grapevines yield less than 5,500 pounds (2.500 Kilos) per hectare. Despite low yields, these are very high quality grapes.

Some of the excellent wines by Dominio de Atuata are: Tinto Fino de Dominio de Atuata, la Mala, Valdegatiles, La Roza, Llanos del Almendro, San Juan, and Palmar. All of these wines are crafted in the Ribera del Dureo DO and they present a wide range of styles. Some of these wines are very powerful with strong minerality while some of their wines are delicate and subtle. All of this depends on the type of wine and its specific grapevines geological position and soil composition.
