To many this is the best Whisky in the world. A single malt Whisky crafted from the purest tradition of Scotland´s natural Whisky production. This Whisky is very distinctive primarily for two reasons: This Whisky is crafted near the sea and because of this the Whisky carries a maritime character (salts, iodine, seaweeds) that are perfectly integrated with the complexity of this Ardbeg Whisky. Furthermore, the roasting of the malts and the burning of the sugar are done is all done naturally giving this Whisky a smoky character. The Whisky then ages 10 years in barrels and it is not filtered.
This Whisky has a brilliant golden appearance with complex aromatics that are very pleasant. We see a wide range of different woods that are entwined with intense and smoky peats, with sweet spices and maritime sensations (iodine and seaweed). The palate of this Whisky is elegant while blunt. This Whisky starts in the palate with light spiced notes, some light sweetness, but then passes rapidly into smoke that fills the palate. There are some citrus touches, toffee and mocha, more spices with a surprising spiciness that lead to a long finish that is very persistent. This complex Whisky retains its marked character for its unique smokiness and noticeable turba (near stone, organic material found in parts of Spain).
For three consecutive years (2008, 2009, 2010) this Whisky has been chosen as the #1 Whisky in the world by Jim Murray in his Whisky Bible. The Wine Enthusiast gave this Whisky a 91/100 and Guía Peñín scored it at 92/100 for the last three years in a row. Here at enterwine.com we love this Whisky and we want you to try it for its turba, if you don´t know what turba is just try it, that’s turba your tasting.
We highly recommend that you enjoy this Whisky alone and without ice.
