Red Wine Brega 2018
Availability: In stock
Produced by the Breca winery, one of Jorge Ordóñez's wine brands, Brega is a first-rate Spanish red wine from DO Calatayud.
This stunning old-vines Grenache comes from two tiny mountainside vineyards composed of slate and quartzite soils. They are planted with one of the oldest Grenache clones in the world, dating back to 1900. Yields per plant are ridiculously low.
Harvested by hand during October and November, alcoholic fermentation of this red wine from Calatayud was carried out in stainless steel tanks of different sizes with indigenous yeasts.
After a short maceration, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. It was subsequently aged for a period of 20 months. The first 10 months were spent in 40% new French oak barrels, and the rest in neutral 600-litre barrels.
Finally, Brega 2018 was blended, bottled, and aged for a further months before its release.
Decant this Crianza red wine a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine Brega is deep violet with a purple rim. |
---|---|
Nose | Impressively deep and amazingly expressive, this old-vines Grenache conveys some of the purest aromas of red fruit one can experience, nuanced by hints of amarena cherries, sweet spices, black pepper and toast, evolving into an ever clearer mineral and earthy note. All in all, the wine is impressively terroir-bound. |
Palate | This red wine of Bodega Breca is bold and powerful, but in full command of itself. Layer upon layer of flavour, with wild berries, some wooden notions and an earthy side. The wine has a sensational acidity and a long finish with some spicy and floral remembrances. |
Our personal opinion | It is amazing how the tough terroir of Calatayud can produce a wine as intoxicating as Brega 2018. Once again, Jorge Ordóñez has produced a superb wine. |
