Product Description
Details

Produced by the Viñedos de Páganos winery, El Puntido is sourced from a single parcel of Tempranillo vines. A 25-hectare vineyard with clay-limestone soils, El Puntido was planted in 1975 at roughly 600 metres above sea level, in the heart of DOCa Rioja.

After a meticulous harvest carried out in October, followed by an exacting selection process, the grapes were destemmed and underwent a pre-fermentation maceration that lasted for 3 days at a constant 6 ºC. During that process, gentle pump-overs and punch-downs were performed on a regular basis.

The alcoholic fermentation of this Spanish red wine was carried out for a period of 10 days at 28-30ºC, with 2-3 pump-overs performed daily.

Then El Puntido 2017 was macerated for 8 days and then it transferred into new French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 16 months.

Finally, this Crianza red wine was aged for 6 months in diposits before being bottled.

It is advisable to decant this red wine from La Rioja at least 40 minutes before drinking.

This wine should have a long life in the bottle.

Appearance

The red wine El Puntido is deep purple with a garnet rim.

Nose

Impressive aromatic intensity, with aromas of blackberries, amarena cherries and crème de cassis. As this Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa opens it shows nuanced balsamic remembrances, some mineral notions and hints of black earth, truffles and tar, combined with vanilla, clove and cardamom.

Palate

Full of volume, meaty and palate-coating. This wine of Viñedos de Páganos de Sierra Cantabria suggests flavourful wild berries entwined with balsamic notes, mineral remembrances and a cedary and peppery note. Very good acidity, bold tannins and long, elegant finish. Still young, with real potential for improvement.

Our personal opinion

The exuberant El Puntido 2017 is a first-class red wine. The Eguren family really have a knack for Tempranillo.
