Adega O'Cotarelo

Adega O'Cotarelo

A small production winery in DO Ribeiro, Galicia.

After working for more than 10 years as a wine grower, Mr. Benigno Ríos Mosquera decided to start his personal project, bodega O Cotarelo, in 2018. The winery is situated in O Barral, on the banks of the Miño river, DO Ribeiro.

Currently, Bodega O Cotarelo farms 5 hectares of vineyards aged over 60 years and planted exclusively with native Galician varieties. The white varieties are Albariño, Treixadura, Godello and Loureira Blanca, and the red varieties are the scarce Brancellao and Sousón, two little-known grapes which produce highly distinctive wines.

Interestingly, the vineyards had been abandoned for some years before Mr. Ríos recovered them after a long and arduous process. As a result, overall production increased from the initial 4,000 bottles to the current 18,000 bottles.

From grape harvesting to vinification and barrel ageing, every stage of the winemaking process is carried out in a very thoughtful manner. Characterful and elegant, the wines from bodega O Cotarelo showcase the distinctive personality of the indigenous varieties from Galicia.
