Balbás

Balbás

A family winery from Ribera del Duero with over two centuries of history.

Founded in 1982, the origins of bodega Balbás date back to 1777. The winery is currently managed by Juan José Balbás and his wife Clara de la Fuente, the sixth generation of the family. Patricia and María, their two daughters, are also committed to the project, ensuring the continuity of this family winery from Ribera del Duero.

The Bodegas Balbás winery has 160 hectares of vineyards near the village of La Horra, in an area known as the “Golden Diamond” of DO Ribera del Duero. The most planted variety is Tinta del País (Tempranillo). The winery also cultivates Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the indigenous white grape Albillo Mayor.

The vines are grown in rocky, sandy and clayey soils with very low levels of organic matter. The climate of the area is harsh and unforgiving, with long, bitterly cold winters, short, very hot summers and little rainfall. The Pagos de Balbás vineyard team tends the vines with sustainable techniques, aimed at stimulating the microbial life of the soil, minimizing erosion and fomenting the integration of the vineyard within its environment. The farming operations follow the lunar calendar, and the use of chemicals and synthetic products is extremely circumspect.

Made under the supervision of winemaker Pedro de la Fuente, the wines of Bodegas Balbás reinterpret the traditional Ribera del Duero character from a modern perspective.
