Batlliu de Sort

High-altitude wines from the Catalan Pyrenees.

Founded in 2007, bodega Batlliu de Sort is the joint project of Ramon, Aleix, Guillem and Josep, four friends with a shared passion for wine born in the Pallars Sobirà region, situated in the western Catalan province of Lleida.

Pioneering the recovery of high-altitude vineyards in the Leridan section of the Catalan Pyrenees, DO Costers del Segre, bodega Batlliu de Sort follows an environmentally friendly approach, tending the land with organic and biodynamic techniques. The plantation of the estate vineyards, which currently cover a surface area of 15 hectares, began in the early XXIth century, in the vicinity of the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, between 900 and 1,200 metres of altitude, an area were grape growing ceased to exist two centuries ago due to rural exodus.

The grape varieties cultivated by the Batlliu de Sort winery are mostly international ones, like the red Pinot Noir and the whites Riesling and Viognier. Benefiting from the cool mountain climate, the vines are planted in slate and limestone soils and vinified with a light-hand in stainless steel tanks, in order to produce Atlantic-styled wines with good freshness and moderate ABV. The winery typically uses no oak or wood to age the wines.

The wine portfolio of high-altitude wines by bodega Batlliu de Sort is solely comprised of still wines. The flagship red is the wine Biu de Sort Negre, made solely from Pinot Noir. The core white is Biu de Sort Blanc, a blend of Riesling and Viognier. The winery also produces the Vi Bord collection from vineyards located in the Conca de Tremp area of DO Costers del Segre.
