Beronia

Beronia

The wines produced by Bodega Beronia are one of classiest and most elegant expressions of the traditional Rioja style.

Founded in 1973 by a group of businessmen, the name of the company comes from an old celtic tribe, the “Berones”, which in the 3rd century BCE populated the area which later became known as La Rioja. In 1982, Bodegas González Byass bought the company but kept the winemaking team led by Matías Calleja, the oenologist responsible for the distinctive personality of Beronia's wines.

Located in the heart of Rioja Alta, in the town of Ollauri, the winery owns 25 hectares of vineyards around its facilities, and controls another 87 hectares on a radius below 10 km. The poor, low-alkaline soils are composed of sand, clay and sediment, and they provide almost ideal conditions for growing fine grapes. The Beronia winery owns several hectares of Pre-Phylloxera, centenary vineyards, as well as more then 50 hectares of over 60-year-old plants. The rest were planted after the creation of the winery.

All of the wines by Bodega Beronia are crafted from meticulously selected grapes farmed following environmentally friendly procedures, some of which are certified organic. The varieties are the traditional Rioja ones: Tempranillo (up to 85% of the whole), Graciano, Mazuelo, Grenache and Viura.

The winery produces almost exclusively Spanish red wines that undergo substantial ageing periods in French or American oak. The classic wines series, representative of the “Beronia style”, includes one Crianza, one Reserva and one Gran Reserva, as well as two young wines, one white and one rosé. Besides, there is a collection of Single varietal wines, an uncommon thing in Rioja, which features products as interesting as a 100% Mazuelo, a true rarity in the region. Finally, the Premium Series is made exclusively from old vines.
