Bodega Numanthia

Bodega Numanthia

Bodega Numanthia produces some of the most elegants wines of the DO Toro.

The name Bodega NumaBodega Numanthianthia is an homage to the legendary city of Numancia, an old iberian settling wich courageously resisted for over 20 years the siege of the Roman army. Thus, as the town of Numancia was able to withstand the fury of the Roman legions, the grapevins of the Toro region were one of the very few wich survived the phylloxera plague, a terrible disease that virtually destroyed all of Europe's vineyards.

The company was founded in 1998 by the prestigious Eguren family, a household name from La Rioja. From the outset, their aim was to produce the absolute best wihne in Toro. In 2008, the Eguren brothers fulfilled their ambition after Termanthia, their flagship wine, got a perfect, 100 point score in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Soon afterwards, the company was bought by the French luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH).

Directed by winemaker Manuel Louzada,  owns 48 hectares of mostly ungrafted, low-yileding vinyeyards in Toro, the main part of which are planted in sandy soils covered with cobble stones. Located at an average altitude of 700 metres, the region receives a huge amount of sunlight over the long, dry summers, while winters are freezingly cold. These factors result in some wonderfully ripe, tannin-rich, high-acidic grapes which are perfect for producing age-worthy wines.

So far, Bodega Numanthia produces three characterful red wines, each of them made solely from Tinta de Toro, the variety indigenous to the region.
