Bodegas Lan

Bodegas Lan

An important producer from La Rioja, strongly committed to tradition and environmental sustainability.

The acronym LAN stands for Logroño, Álava and Navarra, the names of the three provinces within the Rioja wine region in 1972, the year in which Bodegas Lan was founded in the village of Fuenmayor (somewhat confusingly, the province of Logroño changed its name to La Rioja in 1980.) A household name in the region, Bodegas Lan is an important producer both in terms of quality and quantity, with a yearly production around 3,500,000 bottles.

The main product line of Bodegas Lan is Gama Lan. It is composed of three vines: Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. These wines are produced from 400 hectares of vines owned by local winegrowers, who work in close collaboration with the vineyard and winemaking team of Bodegas Lan.

The single parcel wines of the Bodegas Lan winery are made from estate-grown grapes sourced from from Viña Lanciano, a 72-hectare vineyard with pebble soils sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria and situated on a bend of the Ebro river, right on the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Divided into 22 plots with different microclimates, Viña Lanciano is planted with vines 40 to 60 years old farmed following minimal intervention and environmentally sustainable techniques. The winery uses no herbicides whatsoever, and the soil is fertilized with organic manure and pruning waste.

The wines of Bodegas Lan are produced from the traditional varieties Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Mazuelo. The wines are typically vinified in stainless steel tanks and subsequently aged in oak for variable amounts of time, depending on the requirements of a specific parcel of vines, or on whether the wine will be a Crianza, a Reserva or a Gran Reserva. The winery has an impressive assortment of barrels, made from French, American, Russian, Spanish and Hungarian oak. Furthermore, Bodegas Lan also pioneered the use of hybrid oak barrels (made from American oak staves and French oak heads) in the region.
