Bodegas Valdaya

Bodegas Valdaya

This small family winery from Ribera del Duero produces terroir-bound wines through micro-vinifications.

A rising star in DO Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Valdaya was founded by Elena López, the scion of a family of wine growers from Sotillo de la Ribera, together with his Catalan husband Joaquín González. After having worked for some years in activities not related to the wine trade, the couple decided to return to Mrs. López’s native town with the aim of starting a small production winery, which they did in 2005. The daughter of Elena and Joaquín, Miriam, recently joined the team.

After struggling for some years with little results, in 2013 Bodegas Valdaya hired winemakers Marta Ramas and Miguel Fisac, who brought with them the experience and know-how acquired working in top wine regions such as Napa Valley, Cape Town and Saint-Émilion. The new technical managers redefined the whole winemaking approach of the company, as a result of which wine quality improved almost overnight.

Sourced solely from old Tinta del País vineyards planted at 900 metres of altitude, the wines from Bodegas Valdaya are produced through a series of micro-vinifications of the best plots of the winery. Thus, each individual parcel is vinified according to its specific needs and characteristics, after which the resulting wine is aged in oak barrels. Finally, the best wines are blended and bottled.

In 2015, Bodegas Valdaya began a close collaboration with Herència Altés, a Catalan winery from the Terra Alta region which shares most of its core values.
