Clos Mogador

Founded by the incomparable René Barbier, the Clos Mogador winery makes some of the world's finest wines.
The main driving force behind the so-called “Priorat Renaissance”, René Barbier is the scion of an old family of French winemakers. After studying in Bordeaux, Bourgogne and Limoux, in 1979 he bought his first plot in Gratallops, a tiny Grenache vineyard which would became the origin of a legendary wine: Clos Mogador. Today that original plot has expanded considerably, with young and centenary vines coexisting amidst a landscape of olive trees, fruit trees and aromatic plants.
In 2000, Mr. Barbier released his first white wine, Nelin, with the aid of his son René Barbier Jr., realising one of the former's most cherished projects. Soon afterwards, they began producing Clos Manyetes, a single varietal Carignan of remarkable purity. As regards the original wine, Clos Mogador, in 2006 it was granted the "Vi de Finca Qualificada" seal (meaning single vineyard wine), the highest official quality distinction in Catalonia.
For many years, the day-to-day management of the cellar was shared between Mr. Barbier and his late wife Isabelle Meyer, who passed away in 2020 at 68. With an extensive background in the fine arts, she was in charge of design, advertisement and communication. Among other things, she was the author of the painting reproduced in the label of Espectacle, one of Mr. Barbier’s most cherished creations and one of Montsant's great wines.
