Finca Torremilanos

Finca Torremilanos

A pioneer of biodynamic farming in Ribera del Duero.

Although its origins go back to 1905, the modern history of bodega Finca Torremilanos began in 1975, when it was bought by the Peñalba López family, its current owner. At that time the estate had 66 hectares, 32 of which were under vine. In the following years, the Peñalba López family kept adding new vineyards to the estate. Nowadays, bodega Finca Torremilanos has 200 hectares of vineyards.

Located near Aranda de Duero, in the heart of DO Ribera del Duero, at an altitude between 800 and 900 metres above sea level, the Finca Torremilanos winery was one of the very first in the region to follow the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. In 2011, its commitment to organic agriculture was certified by the CAECYL (Council for Organic Agriculture of Castilla y León). In 2015, Finca Torremilanos was the first winery in Ribera del Duero to receive a Demeter certificacion for biodynamic practices. It is worth noting that the whole 200-hectare estate is certified biodynamic. That’s no small achievement, given how costly and labour-intensive this kind of agriculture is.

Scattered across the hills that surround the winery, the estate vineyards of bodega Finca Torremilanos have different exposures, soil typologies, climates and altitudes. The main variety is Tempranillo, the backbone of all the wines of Finca Torremilanos. Besides, there are some plots of Grenache, Bobal and Carignan, and also of the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The white varieties are Tempranillo Blanco, Albillo, Viura, Malvasía and Airén.

Aged 25 to 160+, the vineyards are farmed using no pesticides, insecticides or synthetic products whatsoever. The soil is plowed with animal traction, and the vineyard team utilizes organic manure, vegetal cover and biodynamic preparations for vitalizing the vines and the surrounding natural environment.

The vinification of the Finca Torremilanos wines is traditional and meticulous. The wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, after which they mature for variable amounts of time in French oak barrels built in the winery cooperage. Finca Torremilanos produces basically red wines, as well as a young rosé and a traditional Clarete.

Besides the Ribera del Duero wines, Finca Torremilanos also produces wines in DO Castilla y León through the Peñalba López brand, and also wines under DO Cava.
